The Rama<\/b> (Orach Chaim 183:2) ruled that there is no strict requirement to add water to our wine, as the wines produced today are not strong enough to require dilution. However, the Beit Yosef<\/b> cited the Midrash HaNe\u2019elam<\/b> (Ruth), stating that there is a “great secret” (mystical significance) in adding water to the wine of the blessing; this was also brought down by the Mishnah Berurah<\/b> (sub-section 6).<\/p>\n

Consequently, the Arizal<\/b> (Sha\u2019ar HaMitzvot, Ekev<\/i>), the Ben Ish Chai<\/b>, and the Kaf HaChaim<\/b> elaborated that this act performs a powerful “sweetening of the judgments”<\/b> (Hamtakat HaDinim<\/i>), as mentioned in the Zohar (Parashat Balak<\/i>).<\/p>\n

When to add the three drops of water:<\/h3>\n

There is a difference of opinion regarding the exact moment to add the three drops of water to the wine:<\/p>\n

    According to the Mishnah Berurah (sub-section 5):<\/b> Based on the Beit Yosef<\/i>, the drops should be added at the beginning of the second blessing, “Nodeh Lecha”<\/i><\/b> (“We thank You”).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    According to the Arizal:<\/b> The drops are added while reciting the words “V\u2019achalta v\u2019savata u\u2019verachta et…”<\/i><\/b> (“And you shall eat and be satisfied and bless…”).
